It seemed impossible to choose which striking images to open this page with, but nature's massive sculptures that form the 12 Apostles that battle the waters where the Indian Ocean meets the Tasman Sea eventually won out. But just as affecting in other ways were the clear light of dawn washing mirror-still floodplain billabongs, a forest fire miles away across the Timor Sea from Darwin that lit up the night and sent massive smoke signals across the morning sky. We also tried to capture the depth and lushness of the north easter rainforests, the power and clarity of rivers and canyons in the Northwest Territory, plus a narrow gauge railtrain that conjured up decades past, mysterious mangrove forests, and sailboats skimming along the waves.
