Ceysha Akau/Lopes - I really enjoyed taking pictures with my friends and getting to know the camera a little better. I learned that life has many adventures and life is all a journey. To capture a special moment in time is really special. From a butterfly, to a flower, all is special. I learned that your eyes are your camera. The picture I took reminded me of a person, a very special person, my Mom. All my life I dreamt about having a special Mom and I have one. This picture is as great as anything can be. This picture isn’t a picture I took for my story, but it’s so important to me. It makes me cry to think about a flower. It can last for a long time, but if you don’t take care of it, it fades. Life doesn’t fade, neither do these pictures.

Chloe Szelag - My story is about people down by Keomuku. They never knew the Lord, but one day they built Ka Lana Kila church so Rev. John Mathew could preach there. When he first came, the people would run and hide. Elaine Kaopuiki’s grandfather and grandmother could not have any children so they went to the pastor. He said, “If you believe in Him, you can have children.” They believed in the Lord and had four children. My pictures are of four dolls which represent children.

Jay-R Pasion - My story is about a man who grew up in the olden days. His name is Clarence Elsworth Lehua Richardson. He was born under the banyan tree up at Koele on a rainy day. Because of the rain he got the name Lehua. He was only 12 years old when the ranch closed in 1951. Lehua liked riding horses. I took a picture of the different things mentioned in the story, such as the horses and the banyan tree. To capture these pictures, I walked to Koele and looked around.

Kristi Caberto - I chose this picture because it says hula to me. Since my story is about a lady becoming a hula teacher, it seems to fit. I like this picture because of the texture of uliuli and the look of the black on the red on the wooden floor. Taking pictures and learning about photography is enjoyable. I learned about elements of taking a picture and what makes a good picture. I enjoyed the process of taking pictures and learning about photography. The things we learned were elements of taking a picture, like texture, perspective, color, and the golden moment of light.

Lauren Mamaclay - My story is about a kid who ditches school to climb coconut and mango trees. When adults see him from the bottom of the tree, they ask him for some fruit. With the quarter he gets from each customer, he goes to the movies or buys a soda. I took pictures of a coconut tree. It was in someone’s yard, so it was pretty difficult. It was very short and there was a jeep behind it. I shot it at an angle so you couldn’t see the house or the jeep. The leaves from the coconut tree are at the bottom left hand corner. I cut out a lot of the tree.

Tanisha Batoon - I enjoyed taking pictures, both outdoors and indoors where I could put things in the background and make a special
picture. I wanted to use a picture of cake since it was in my story but it was kind of dark and my teacher and I liked this outdoor picture showing living things, which is also what the story was about. I liked that pictures have a feeling to them.

Tehani Palolo - It was exciting to take the pictures and learn how to use the camera. I learned the elements and it was interesting. One of the things I enjoyed was that everyone saw things differently. While not everything we did was new, I did learn how to put film in a camera. This photograph ties into my story because it is the oldest church on Lana’i and it was the only picture that had light. Also, I took this picture because my grandpa loved that church
