Of special note this year: Based upon the maturing growth of the program in the last 5 years (over 65 students now participated since 2003), the University of Hawai'i at Manoa: Outreach College funded a spin off program! Called Young Voices, three of our most experienced Lana'i storytellers who have also shown a passion and affinity for interpreting Oral History stories of the island's past were matched with three young musicians from a simliar program on Moloka'i that focuses on music. The six youngsters toured statewide, performing music and storytelling at a variety of venues including senior centers and schools, culminating in a public performance at the Paliku Theater in Honolulu on April 25th. Not only did the two groups bond, learn and raise each other's levels of professionalism, but they gained the experience of professional touring before unknown live audiences. Their poise, skills and abilities grew a thousandfold during the tour. An additional benefit is the three Lana'i storytellers, Kenny Cabanting, Kristi Caberto and Tehani Palolo returned to Lana'i to work as Master Interns in the 2009 Art & Story program, helping to coah and train newer or younger stoyrtellers. This is the ultimate sign of the program's growth, when students begin to teach and pass on to others what they have learned! Special thanks to Mr. Tim Slaughter at UH Manoa Outreach! |
